About

Hi, I’m Andy and I’m an English tutor with 7+ years of experience in helping students improve their analytical and creative writing skills.  I mainly support students doing GCSE English language & literature, although I do help a number of primary school students.

In 2016, I graduated with a 2:1 in Drama & Film from the University of Sussex. I’ve worked in a range of different learning environments, from class-based to home-based and now online 1 to 1. I prefer helping students on a 1 to 1 basis as they typically make progress faster, and the pace of each tutoring session can be tailored to each individual student.

I enjoy helping students learn to write with clarity and purpose. I see potential in every student, and I do my best to make tutoring sessions as engaging as possible.

Using Zoom for video calling & Google docs, students can see what I’m typing and vice versa and we can edit answers much faster compared to when writing by hand. There’s also no need to painstakingly re-write something by hand for the sake of a simple edit.

Please note that for peace of mind, I have a fully enhanced DBS certificate.

Super-Efficient Tutoring Sessions on Zoom & Google Docs

I use a combination of Zoom (the video calling software) and Google Docs.

This makes it easy to communicate online without going on the phone. A web cam helps, although it’s not strictly necessary.

Answers Are Typed & Edited in real-time

we can make side-by-side comparisons of old & new answers

Students don’t need to rewrite answers from scratch. That can be very time-consuming. Instead, we can easily create side-by-side comparisons of old & new drafts, or highlight sections that need improving.

Work is backed up on the cloud

Everything is automatically backed up on Google Docs. We can stay organised & keep track of progress, look back at old answers & see improvements as we go.

FAQ

Can you work with A-Level English students?

Yes, I do & have done, but it depends on what your child is studying. I’ve read & studied all the GCSE texts but when it comes to A-Level English, the texts vary, so I can only judge on a case by case basis.

Do you offer tuition for any other subjects?

I specialise in English only. If you need a tutor for maths, science or any other subject, just let me know and I’ll see if I can recommend someone.

Does my child need a web cam?

No. It’s not necessary, but it can help. When students use a web cam, it’s easier for me to tell when they’re confused. I can also tell if they’re getting distracted. Without a web camera, I have to rely on their voice.

Can my child use their tablet?

Only if the tablet is of a suitable size (like the iPad Pro), but I recommend that they use a computer or a laptop instead — something with a solid state drive, which most are these days anyway. A computer with a solid state drive (also known as an SSD) loads much faster and experiences less lag during start up.

Can you help my child prepare for the 11+?

Yes I can, but the online setup might not be well suited for young students. To get the most out of our sessions, students need to have a decent typing speed and many primary aged students don’t. I can only decide on a case-by-case basis.

Are you DBS certified?

Yes, I’ve got a clean, fully enhanced DBS certificate.

How does payment work?

Normally, I ask that all payments are to be made up-front on a monthly basis via bank transfer. This also provides a simple paper-trail of payments so we can keep track in case of any issues. I’m happy to issue a receipt or invoice upon request.
